Top 10: Most Overused Words

Andrew Chomik
Languages are some of human being's greatest creations. These sophisticated systems of communications that were developed over thousands of years in thousands of different communities around the world are a testament to the ability of the Homo sapiens' brain. So why, with all of our linguistic prowess and vocabulary variety, do we have to use words far more than they were intended? The English language is full of these, and much to our chagrin they’re prevalent and not going anywhere.

So, here is a list of today’s 10 most overused words that make your ears burn every time you hear them

Like

Most Overused Words How this word is still used as a standard in the English language is astounding. People have been using the word like so liberally for the last 15 years that it’s become so commonplace no one even knows when they actually say it. It’s a sixth sense for scores of slang-tongued hipsters.

Originally used as an adjective to describe comparison, its slow and painful conversion to an interjection is now dominating conversations for any Gen X- or Y-er that grew up with two-star-rated (or less) dumb blonde movies. The only saving grace for this word is that when someone uses it too much, people will have no problem calling you out on it and exposing the below-average nature of this verbal ear sore.

Honorable mention

LOL
“Laughing out loud” or “lots of laughs” is probably the most popular acronym used by web-savvy keyboard warriors when instant messaging or chatting with friends online. Unfortunately, much like other viral software code, this short-form description has spiraled out of control as l33t speak on the internet (the actual term for internet “talk”). Now you can’t browse a web page or a blog without LOL being used somewhere, and thus aggravating proponents of proper e-English worldwide

Nice

Most Overused Words Here’s another bit of verbal overkill that has unfortunately lost its purpose. This once-friendly word has now been turned into a fallback excuse to tell people you’re not interested in their conversation. A lot of people who can’t listen, or refuse to listen, will drop this after someone tells a story, gives an anecdote or makes a comment. “Nice” they’ll respond, as in “OK, I have nothing to say to that.” The worst part is when the listener uses it as a means to end the conversation or to indirectly suggest an end to the current conversation. For this reason, it’s become a form of excuse, and has now fallen into the realm of overused words -- and is a compliment no more. .

Top 10 Most Expensive Perfumes for Women
Having a nice and pleasant smell always makes a good impression. In fact it may even leave a lasting memory since the sense of smell is very good at keeper memories. Putting on perfume is the best way to have a nice scent that lasts hours. It is made from a mixture of oils and fragrances that are supposed to mix with the body’s chemistry and compliment it. Extracting the best ingredients for the right perfume is costly which is why some perfumes can cost more than an arm and a leg. But the good news is that even though a couple of ounces may cost a couple thousand, only a few drops are necessary to smell good throughout the day.
Here are the top 10 most expensive perfumes for women.

10. JAR Bolt of Lightning Perfume ($765)

10
This perfume was designed by Joel A. Rosenthal, hence the name. Its scent was meant to smell just like the air that circulates after lightning strikes. Perhaps its name comes from the way the perfume reacts with the body. Its scent transforms very fast but is tuberose. It starts off smelling like flowers, fruits, and newly cut grass but in the end it becomes sweeter and there is a hint of musk. The fragrance lasts a very long time. It is packaged in a hand-cut bottle that was designed for this French fragrance.

9. Joy Parfum by Jean Patou ($800)

9
This perfume could give Chanel No. 5 a run for its money as it was voted “Scent of the Century,” by the Fragrance Foundation in 2000 although it has been around since 1936. The scent is a very strong floral one and it is said to have more than 300 roses and about 10,000 jasmine flowers. It is a hit in Hollywood as it is one of the most popular scents which many actresses carry and is available in 1-ounce bottles.

8. Shalini ($900)

8
The strong floral scent of Shalini is meant to evoke flowers that are in full bloom. And like most expensive perfumes, it comes in a small bottle. Its scent has a strong white floral tone with a mix of tuberose and tiare flowers. It has base notes of musk and sandalwood. The complexity of this fragrance is not the only thing that makes this perfume a success. It is known for having a long lasting fragrance that transforms from a heavy floral one to a flower that is in full bloom.

7. Hermes’ 24 Faubourg ($1,500)

7
This is a limited edition perfume created by Maurice Roucel. Only one thousand bottles were created and they were only sold per ounce. Its bottle, made out of crystal, is shaped like a square that has some contouring as it is meant to convey movement. The scent is light with floral notes. The reason why it comes in one ounce bottles is because the scent lasts a long time and not much is needed to smell good.

6. Annick Goutal’s Eau d’Hadrien ($1,500)

6
The citrus scent of Eau de Hadrien suit both men and women. Its fragrance is mostly citrus because of the mixture of lemon, mandarin orange, Sicilian lemon, cypress, and grapefruit although it has a hint of floral thanks to the ylang ylang extracts. Because of the heavy notes of citrus, it is great on the skin. It has a refreshing scent, too which is perfect for the day. The designer of the fragrance, Annick Goutal created this scent because of her love for Tuscany and because of the inspiration from the novel Memoirs of Haiden.

5. Baccarat Les Larmes Sacrees de Thebes ($1,700)

5
Baccarat is the only crystal manufacturer that has entered the perfume industry. After making bottles for the Clive Christian scents, the company decided to come up with a scent for its own brand. The scent was meant to have a middle eastern aroma which is why it is a concoction of frankincense and myrrh. It comes in a crystal bottle that is made out of crystal, of course, and is shaped like a pyramid.

4. Chanel No. 5 ($1,850)

4
At the fourth spot is Chanel No. 5, a well known perfume that has been around for decades. Aside from it being the most fabulous perfume known to the world of high fashion, it was the first ever perfume by Mademoiselle Coco Chanel. It has heavy tones of jasmine. Though it was once given for free to some of Chanel’s most valued clients, it is now sold at $1,850.

3. Caron’s Poivre ($2,000)

3
Included in the top three is a fragrance by French perfumery Caron, even if its price is less than 10% of the number one most expensive perfume. Caron’s Poivre is a unisex fragrance that has been around since the 50’s. It has a top note of spicy pepper which is what makes it appeal to both men and women. A veteran perfumery in France, Caron is best known for having a ‘nose’ or a master perfumer who ensures their perfumes smell amazing.

2. Clive Christian No. 1 for women ($2,150)

2
Costing 90% less than the most expensive perfume in the world is by Clive Christian again. Clive Christian No. 1 has a scent for men and for women. What makes it expensive is the bottle, made out of crystal, it has a neck that is made out of 24-karat gold-plated sterling silver. Aside from that, it is made from a combination of bergamot, orris, sandalwood, natural gum resin, vanilla, and ylang ylang extract. But since these ingredients are not available year round, it is not so easy to come up with this brilliant fragrance.

1. Clive Christian Imperial Majesty ($215,000)

1
The most expensive perfume is not only pricey, it is also fancy. From the bottle to the way it is delivered, there’s no wonder it costs hundreds of thousands of dollars. The bottle’s design is meant for royalty with a collar made with 18 carat gold. It does not even end there, a five carat diamond is stuck to the fabulous golden collar. Each bottle is delivered in a Bentley. Interested buyers ought to order one now since it is a limited offer.

Top 10 Most Expensive Watches Made By Rolex

Mention the name Rolex and you will automatically think of luxury and ultra reliable watches. Considered as one of the most valuable brands in the world today, the company is the largest single luxury watch brand. It produces around 2,000 watches daily and has revenues in the billions of dollars.
Alfred Davis and Hans Wildorf established Rolex in 1905. Originally based in London, the company eventually transferred to Geneva in 1919.
Sports lovers will always see the Rolex sign in tennis grand slam tournaments, particularly in Wimbledon and in the Australian Open. The brand has been used in the most extreme of conditions. It went down to 10,916 meters when Jacques Piccard and Don Walsh dove the depth of the Mariana Trench in 1960. Both men sported a Rolex Sea Dweller Deep Sea Special at that time.
It has also gone way up when the chief guide of the Hillary expedition to the peak of Mount Everest wore the brand in 1953 during their assault of the world’s highest mountain. Tenzing Norgay, as well as other members of the team, was sporting Rolex Oysters on their way to the top, reaching an altitude of 8,848 meters.
The watch is a proven timepiece. Here is a list of the top ten most expensive watches made by Rolex.

1. 1942 Rolex Chronograph – $1.16 million

Only 12 pieces of this 1942 classic were made. Originally estimated to have a value of around $680 thousand, it went at a Christie’s auction for $1.16 million. The watch has a nickel finish and lever movement and silver matte dials. It features 17 jewels and pink gold Arabic and baton numerals. It also has outer minute divisions, blue telemeter, black tachymeter scales, two subsidiary dials for constant seconds, a 30-minute register, and a split second chronograph mechanism.

2. Eric Clapton’s 1971 Rolex Daytona - $505,000

Just like his guitars, Eric Clapton’s watch seems to be highly valued. The watch features a silver monochrome dial, a stark contrast to the more common design themes of Rolex that have different schemes. As a result, the watch was nicknamed Albino. The price of the watch in the market is around a hundred thousand, but Slowhand himself had worn this one, thus, the increase in its value.

3. Rolex GMT 116769TBR – $485,350

This is the most expensive watch that comes directly from Rolex. It features a wave diamond dial with luminous hour markers. The hands are luminous as well, though it is lined in black. The bracelet is made of white gold weighing 18 carats. Along with the sides, it is filled with diamonds. The self-winding, automatic watch features an Oysterlock clasp and can go down to 100 meters of water resistance. Even the case and locks are encrusted with 76 brilliant round diamonds.

4. James Bond 1973 Rolex 5513 – $450,000

The watch was used in the Roger Moore movie Live and Let Die. It has a white on black dial, and stainless steel body and strapping. And since it was used in a James Bond movie, it features a razor disc, buzz saw, and a magnetic field generator. Bond used the razor disc to remove a woman’s dress and the magnetic field generator to dodge a bullet. It sounds cool, but while you may try the watch to take off a woman’s clothing, you should do the wise thing and not try the bulletproof feature brought about by the magnetic field.

5. Dr. Rajendra Prasad’s Gold Rolex Oyster – $440,000

The first president of India, Dr. Rajendra Prasad, owned this watch. It was given to him in 1950 during India’s first ever Republic Day. The watch features an 18K gold dial with a map of India dated 26 January 1950 inscribed into it.

6. Rolex Platinum Pearlmaster 18956 – $276,000

This is a special edition watch that measures 39 millimeters. It features a baguette diamond bezel and bracelet. The dial is made of meteorite diamond. The double-quick set is made of sapphire crystal and has a hidden clasp. This watch was released in 2011 and comes with Rolex books, tags and leather wallet.

7. Paul Newman Ferrari Red Rolex Daytona 6565 – $267,203

Paul Newman was an American actor who starred in a 1969 movie called Winning, which was about racecar driving. A book about the actor released afterwards featured publicity still from the film in which Newman was wearing a Rolex Daytona. As Ferrari was known for its red color, Rolex designed a watch based on it. The watch is stainless steel coated with tritium and comes with a fat strap.  It is winded manually and has 17 jewel components. The dial is 37 millimeters wide and has red enamel.

8. Steve McQueen 1967 Rolex Submariner – $234,000

Steve McQueen starred in the 1971 film Le Mans. He sported a Rolex Submariner that had automatic movement at its center and a COSC-certified chronometer. It was made of stainless steel and can work up to 200 meters below the water level.

9. Paul Newman Rolex Daytona – $106,273

This has always been one of the signature watches of the luxury brand. Its casing and dial are made of 14k champagne gold. The tachometer outside and the three interior sub dials were all fitted with black enamel to give the watch a contrast. The round case is 38 millimeters wide, and features sub dials for seconds, 30 minutes, and 12 hours. The hands are luminous and the main dial has accents to give it emphasis. The watch also features 17 jewels in its nickel finished lever movement. Only 200 units were ever built.

10. Rolex Submariner for Cartier – $100,000

Rolex created a couple of watches that was exclusively sold by Cartier in its Fifth Avenue shop in New York. The first one was the Double Red Sea Dweller that sold for $91 thousand. The second is this Submariner that is sold with matching archive papers and red box from Cartier that indicates the date of purchase.
